A Scenic Journey: Hiking to Monte Tambura in the Apli Apuane

hiking trails

Last summer, we embarked on a two-day adventure that took us deep into the heart of nature, from the charming town of Vagli Sopra to the majestic peak of Monte Tambura. Nestled in the Apli Apuane, this hike promised not just physical challenges, but also breathtaking vistas and unforgettable moments.

Our journey began with a roadtrip from Lucca to Vagli Sopra, a route that in itself is an exploration of beauty. Along the way, we paused to marvel at the enchanting Vagli Lake, its waters mirroring the clear blue sky above. Arriving at "Oasi di Campocatino," we parked our car and indulged in a delightful antipasti and some pasta’s at Rifugio Ristorante Campocatino, gearing up for the adventure ahead.Tip: there is also a picknick spot near the Rifugio with magnificent views on Vagli Lake.

The trail, downloaded from Komoot, led us through a diverse landscape. Thick forests, towering mountains, butterflies, bees and the occasional glimpse of wildlife accompanied our ascent. The absence of water points emphasized the importance of carrying enough water, especially during the summer months.

After a four-hour hike, we reached Rifugio Nello Conti, our haven for the night. Surrounded by the grandeur of the Apli Apuane, the rifugio offered panoramic views that stretched to the sea near Massa and Forte dei Marmi. The evening treated us to a mesmerizing sunset, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. Tip: If you want to spend the night, make a reservation upfront at Nello Conti by email. The Rifugio is clean and the food is good. We enjoyed it!

Determined to witness the sunrise from the peak of Monte Tambura, we set out early. It is a small climb from the Rifugio. The climb was invigorating, the air crisp and the scenery unparalleled. At the summit, as the first rays of sunlight kissed the landscape awake, we felt a sense of accomplishment and awe.

With hearts full of gratitude and memories etched in our souls, we descended back to Rifugio Ristorante Campocatino, where we parked the car. After a hearty lunch, we refreshed ourselves with a swim at the public swimming pool near Vagli lake, soaking in the joy of our achievement. As we bid farewell to this enchanting corner of the Apli Apuane, we knew that Monte Tambura's allure would forever linger in our hearts.
